"I get so excited seeing the weeks programming ahead" Troy Smith

Troy is a masters athlete here at MVMT42. He works with a coach through individual program design. Troy has all programming tailored for him, his lifestyle and his goals.

Troy was already a great athlete before setting his sights on The Sport of CrossFit. His training has gone through a phase of skill acquisition and off season strength work (absolute strength). Now we are beginning to taper his training for competitions.

1) What made you hire a coach for individual program design?

The skill requirement for crossfit is high. I was only going to improve significantly if I had a program dedicated to me and the skills I needed to compete at a high level. I wanted to be in the elite club amongst fellow Masters around the world within 3 years from joining Crossfit, quite a challenge. MVMT42's dedicated individual programming provides the know how and the tools to achieve this.

2) Tell us about your background in fitness?

I have been on a fitness fix pretty much since I turned 40 although I have played badminton every week for over twenty years now.

I have competed in a few Spartan Beasts, Tough Mudder, Hell Runner obstacle course races as well as many 10k races and half marathons. I also completed The Great Wall Marathon in China, the 3rd toughest marathon in the world with 90 degree heat and over 5,000 steps to climb. I've worked on my core over the last 5 years or so building up to a 45 minute abdominal hover plank and in 2014 I managed to break the Guinness World Record for a weighted plank with 100lb on my back.

I used to be a member of Virgin Active doing classes such as bodypump boot camp etc that were great fun as well as individual strength work in the gym. The classes were always full so it was not possible for the instructor to guide all the participants on form and after joining MVM42 I soon realised I had fallen into some common bad habits with lifting and squatting etc so we got to work stripping technique back and starting all over again.

I am very focused on my diet and disciplined on my meal prep 24/7. This is a vital element of my training and with he abuse I put my body through in the gym it's the least I can do to repay it back for all the effort it gives me. I use protein supplements as well as creatine and dextrin but as a rule always prefer good natural unprocessed food to get all my nutrients.

3) How does the programming compare with your old style of training

It's tough, challenging for sure and apart from your coach your on your own. With that comes a much wider variety of training.

We get to use equipment that couldn't possibly be used in a normal Crossfit class. We are drilled with a variety of different fitness tests, strength, skills, endurance, aerobic, anaerobic on a daily basis mixing in gymnastics elements with Olympic lifting not forgetting mobility.

4) Why do you continue to invest in personal coaching

I continue with personal programming at MVMT42 because the results have been clearly visible and my strength and conditioning continues to improve. My skill sets have broadened a lot enabling me to compete on a European level qualifying for the European Masters Final in Hungary two years running now finishing 24th in 2016 18th in 2017 and next year is where I'm hoping to attack a podium place.

4) How do you balance work/life/training at MVMT42

It's tough I'm an MD of a successful business and I am a husband a father and a grandfather but I make time for it, get up early. Work smart, prep properly and load up the car with food in my mobile fridge and the gym kit in the car. It's not unusual to visit a client in Leeds then off to another city back to Brighton straight to the gym to complete my daily program. If your serious and really want to achieve great results you have to commit to the program.

5) Whats the benefits you have seen from individual program design

Along with good nutrition individual programming has seen me PR in so many areas at the same time as increase my body weight from 72kg to 78.6 kg in just the last 12 months. This is also a fairly lean muscle gain to.

By focusing a lot on my gymnastics MVMT42 have bullet proofed my shoulders strengthened my back and conquered skills such as bar muscle ups, butterfly pull-ups, strict hand stand push ups, snatch, delivering a PB back squat of 165 kgs a front squat of 135 kgs and recently a power clean of 100kg and a push jerk of 97.5kgs. My Olympic lifting skills are improving more and more as following gymnastic this has been my focus most recently.

I get so excited seeing the weeks programming ahead as it's loaded up onto fitbot. You can see videos of various skills record your results and upload your own videos and results. You can add notes constantly informing your coach of how the training is going and gain feedback, advice as you go along.

I can not recommend individual program design at MVMT42 enough.
